The hypocrisy of buying domain names for my family

One of my pet peeves is when I come up with an idea, go to purchase a suitable domain for the project, only to discover that it’s been taken and is being squatted upon.

Domain squatting or cybersquatting is pretty rampant, and likely quite lucrative if you get the right domain at the right time, but it’s also highly annoying. Go search for almost any combination of real words ending in .com, .net or other highly desired domain ending and you’ll see what I mean. You can get pretty much anything ending in .fish, but.. you know… why?

With this in mind, I feel like I’m being completely hypocritical when I tell you that years ago I bought, and continue to hold, the domain names for myself (you’re on the site now – it’s in use, so I get a pass), as well as the domains for all the members of my immediate family. All but one of them has not used the domain, and so I’m being the jerk who is cybersquatting.

However, I feel less bad given the fact that the domains are in this format:

FirstnameSurname.com

This means that there’s a TINY audience of people who’d want to own the domains in the first place.

But hypocrisy is hypocrisy no matter how you dress it up, and I hereby offer an apology to anyone who wishes to own those domains. Like me, you’re saddled with the somewhat comedy surname of Wrigley, so there’s pity as well as sorrow coming your way! I will happily furnish you with a bowl of hot, delicious, home made soup if you’re one of those people.

Do you do this? Was I wise to squat on these domains? Leave a comment…

  1. It still hurts me that I don’t get rhyswynne on any social network. Happy with rhys.wales as the best one I have :). You can prise that from my cold dead hands!

    1. You see, it’s not just me. Rhys does it too, and he’s a really nice chap – I’ve met him. I feel less bad now, but sad that the .com was not available!
