When I was a child, back in the 1970s, Christmas was a thing that happened in December, and most frequently in late December.
The house got decorated in December, the shops began their Christmas advertising campaigns in December, my school started to rehearse Christmas things in December.
Fast forward to now, the year 2025, and we’ve allowed Christmas to slowly but surely push further back into the year.
Mince pies were available in the shops in early October, lights went up around the shopping area of my closest town at the end of October, shop fronts, one-by-one are going, or have gone, full-on Christmas, and we’ve just entered November. This is all Christmas before Halloween.
I understand the commercial pressure to make the most of this once a year moment. If I were running a shop, I’d likely do the same thing.
So there’s one side of me which regrets that Christmas comes earlier and earlier, but I’ve already eaten a boat load of mince pies, I love the twinkly lights now that the evening are drawing in, and I’m getting quite excited about the all-the-christmas-things despite myself!
Can we stop at October though? If we ever get to Christmas in June, then all hope is lost!
